Since 2006, Rob Baytor has established a multidisciplinary studio practice that encompasses a variety of media and design approaches. Through painting, sculpture, mixed media and large-scale architectural installations; Baytor has developed a broad knowledge of application techniques and materials exampled by varied designs, builds and installations. Communicating a visual, tactile aesthetic conscious of a work’s spatial surroundings, design and space; has been a goal to cumulatively establish a style or authorship that earmarks both art historical references as well as the everyday industrial designs we live with. Focusing on the dimensional aspects of a work, specifically producing two or three-dimensional objects in materials and methods that link to a visual or literary narrative while connecting to the destination’s environment; Baytor’s work operates in a language that fluctuates between the touch-of-the-hand to machine fabrication, with an awareness of both creative histories.
Specifically exploring a multimedia approach, Baytor has produced, constructed studio objects that are abstract yet somehow also familiar to the viewer. Paintings and sculptures fluctuate back and forth between these two different languages, challenging the viewer’s sensibilities and point of reference. From a choice or selection of elements such as colour and line to larger design principles such as balance or scale; Baytor continues to explore artworks that function in the most private of places to the common, public spaces, punctuating as objects to stop and encounter.
Completing his BFA at the OCAD University in 2006, Baytor currently works as an artist based jointly in Hamilton/Toronto as well as adjunct locations. Studio works can be found in private, public and corporate collections across North America, Europe and South America.
